Yachtsman character jug - Royal Doulton 1971-1979

Yachtsman character jug modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1971-1979. The Yachtsman follows in England's long tradition as an island nation with a fascination for the sea. Ensuing in the wake of Cook, Drake, Raleigh and Nelson, sailing has become a national pastime in England and now, around the world. A yacht may be defined as a vessel used only for pleasure and may be any size, from a small sailing craft to a steam-powered, ocean-going ship. Modern yachts originated in the Netherlands, where they were called jaght boats. Certainly in today's world it requires a substantial nest egg to become a yachtsman, but the pleasures derived are incalculable. Whether out for a weekend cruise or sailing around the world, yachting is an exhilarating pastime. Perhaps one of these gentlemen will even someday skipper an America's Cup contender. A sailing yacht forms the handle of the jug.
