Women's Royal Naval Service character jug designed by Caroline Dadd and modeled by Zoe (Valerie) Annand, produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 2004 limited edition of 250. The Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS, popularly known as the “Wrens”) was a non-combat branch of the United Kingdom Royal Navy that recruited women. Members included cooks, clerks, wireless telegraphers and electricians. First formed in 1916 during World War I with about 5,000 women, it was revived by the British Admiralty in 1938 with an expanded list of allowable activities, including flying transport planes. At its peak in 1944, 74,620 women had enlisted. During the war more than one-hundred Wrens died. The WRNS was eventually wound down again in the 1950s, and was finally integrated into the regular Royal Navy in 1993. One of the slogans used in recruiting posters during the war was “Join the Wrens—Free a man for the fleet.” A compass, anchor and naval badge form the handle of the jug.
