Woman Driver toby jug - Orchies circa 1915

Woman Driver majolica toby jug produced by Orchies of Orchies, France, circa 1915. This Woman Driver jug commemorates all of the female vehicle drivers who supported the French military during World War I. Whether driving new automobiles or more traditional horse drawn wagon, these brave women were invaluable to the war effort. Each driver wore a badge on their lapel with the regiment they served, regiment U3 in the case of this young lady who is seated on a new motorized vehicle with the steering wheel grasped in her hands and her long blond hair forming the handle of the jug. Orchies model numbers are a combination of letters and numbers. The letters are an abbreviation for the name of the jug and the number is the size of the jug.
