Veteran Motorist character jug produced by Capodimonte of Italy in 1970. With his goggles, silk scarf and green hat, this splendid chap is all ready for a spin in his new automobile. These early motoring accessories were a must when the driver was at the mercy of the elements in his open-top car. A horn such as the one featured in the handle of this jug was also a necessity to warn unsuspecting pedestrians of the approach of this bizarre four-wheeled machine. In the early days of the automobile in England, law required that the car be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag, but this law was abolished in 1905. That same year the famed London to Brighton Veteran Car Rally began. It is still run every November, attracting large crowds to view these magnificently preserved and restored pre-1905 vehicles, driven by enthusiasts dressed in period motoring costumes such as this.
