Unkel Sam toby jug cream - Wardle circa 1900

Unkel Sam toby jug designed by Frederick Rhead and produced in a cream coloway by Wardle of Hanley, England, circa 1900. Uncle Sam is the jocular name and personage given to the government of the United States.
Uncle Sam is often depicted as a tall, thin man having a white beard and wearing a blue tailcoat, red-and-white-striped trousers, and a tall hat with a band of stars.
Over the years he has become recognized worldwide as the United States' national symbol. This Unkel Sam toby jug bears a strong similarity to the toby jugs Rhead designed for Shelley Pottery before joining Wardle. Is was likely intended to be a part of the Shelley range, but not completed before Rhead moved to Wardle.
