Ulysses S. Grant/Robert E. Lee double-sided character jug modeled by Michael Abberley and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1983 limited edition of 9,500. Ulysses Simpson Grant and Robert Edward Lee were the best-known opposing commanders in the American Civil War (1861-65). These two generals were pitted against each other in May, 1864, when Grant and his federal army attempted to take the Confederate capital at Richmond. Grant was unable to defeat Lee and sustained heavy losses early in the campaign. Grant's troops were soon filled by fresh replacements, while Lee's soldiers grew weak and his own health declined. Eventually Lee was forced to evacuate to nearby Petersburg and uncover Richmond, which practically ended the war. He surrendered on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. The handle on Grant's side is the Union flag, while on Lee's side is the Confederate flag.
