Toby XX stoneware large size toby jug in a brown waistcoat modeled by Harry Simeon and produced by Royal Doulton of Lambeth, England, between 1924 and 1929. Toby XX, or Double XX, is a gentleman toper sitting atop a keg with two Xs on the front. In the early 1890s brown Toby XX jugs impressed X7065 and 3700 were made for Phillips of Oxford Street, those impressed X5430 were made for Guinness Stout and another variation was made for W. Dow & Co. Toby XX was remodeled as a colored stoneware toby jug by Harry Simeon in the 1920s. The image of Toby XX harks back to the Man on a Barrel tobies produced by numerous English and French potters in the nineteenth century. Toby's long hair forms the handle of the jug. The smaller size stands 6 3/4" tall.
