American Toby Jug Museum 

Toby Fillpot character jug in a cream colorway produced by Pacific Pottery of Los Angeles, California, circa 1950. Toby Fillpot was the subject of a popular poem, The Brown Jug, by Francis Fawkes, and possibly served as the inspiration for the creation of the toby jug. The most widely accepted theory is that the original was a Yorkshireman, Henry Elwes, who was 'famous for drinking 2,000 gallons of strong stingo beer from his silver tankard, while eating nothing." He was nicknamed Toby Fillpot, and after his death in 1761, the London publisher of popular prints, Carrington Bowles, issued a mezzotint portrait of him. Toby is wearing a wig and colonial hat. Across the front of the hat is inscribed "A genial smile be his the one who drinks from Toby's jug." The Colonial Man is a part of Pacific Pottery's Coralitos line.
