Toby Fillpot character jug - John Humphreys Pottery circa 1990

Toby Fillpot character jug produced by John Humphreys Pottery of Staffordshire, England, circa 1990 in a limited edition of 1,000. Toby Fillpot was the subject of a popular poem, The Brown Jug, by Francis Fawkes, and possibly served as the inspiration for the creation of the toby jug. The most widely accepted theory is that the original was a Yorkshireman, Henry Elwes, who was 'famous for drinking 2,000 gallons of strong stingo beer from his silver tankard, while eating nothing." He was nicknamed Toby Fillpot, and after his death in 1761, the London publisher of popular prints, Carrington Bowles, issued a mezzotint portrait of him. Commissioned by Pick-Kwik Wines & Spirits, this Toby Fillpot character jug is an advertising piece for Jim Beam Bourbon Whiskey.
