The Ugly Duchess toby jug - Henrietta Dew circa 1930

The Ugly Duchess toby jug attributed to Henrietta Dew, Head of Crafts Department at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland, circa 1930. The Ugly Duchess is best known as the antagonist of The Queen of Hearts in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In her first appearance the Duchess seems nearly as unpleasant as the Queen herself but later on treats Alice with friendliness and respect. The Ugly Duchess is also a satirical portrait painted by the Flemish artist Quentin Matsys around 1513. The portrait is thought to be a source for John Tenniel's 1869 illustrations of the Duchess in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
