The Sleuth character jug modeled by Alan Moore and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1973-1996. The sleuth was inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. A sleuth, or detective, is a clever investigator who is able to piece together a variety of vital clues and deduce events surrounding criminal activities. He is someone whose job it is to discover information about crimes and find out who is responsible for them. The term sleuth is derived from an old Norse word "sloth", meaning to track. A sloth-hound or sleuthhound is thus a hound that tracks its prey by its scent. His deerstalker hat, pipe and magnifying glass confirm that this jug was originally intended to be Sherlock Holmes but British copyright laws forced a substitute name when the jug went into production. A pipe and magnifying glass form the handle of this jug. This Sleuth character jug was made in three sizes with this being the large size along with a small (D6635) and miniature (D6639) size.
