The Phantom of the Opera character jug modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1995 limited edition of 2,500 commissioned by Lawleys By Post. Gaston Leroux’s "Le Fantome de l’Opera" is a classic tale of love, rejection and revenge. "The Phantom of the Opera" tells the story of a disfigured musical genius who haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera, waging a reign of terror over its occupants. When he falls fatally in love with the lovely Christine, the Phantom devotes himself to creating a new star for the Opera, exerting a strange sense of control over the young soprano as he nurtures her extraordinary talents. Written in 1910, the story acquired worldwide fame in 1925 when Universal Studios released a film based on the novel. Several plays and movies have followed, but none has approached the success of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s operatic musical which, in 2006, surpassed the all-time record for continuous Broadway performances. This jug memorably captures the mysterious masked character from Leroux’s novel. A stage curtain and lantern form the handle of the jug.
