The Master character jug in a trial colorway modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1991. The Master, otherwise known as The Equestrian in the United States, depicts a master horseman. The definition of an equestrian is one who rides a horse or performs on horseback. A Master is someone skilled in equitation, the art of riding a horse while demonstrating full control, and often competing in specific events. Riding as a skilled sport developed from the style of mounted knights in the medieval period. Horse shows, originated by Ireland's Royal Dublin Society in 1864, offer riders a chance to test their skills in competition. Contests are held among hunters and jumpers, plus a test of overall training and obedience, known as dressage. Equestrian events have been held in the Olympic Games since 1912. This Master has an air of confidence that may carry him to the Winner's Circle in his next competition. A horse's head forms the handle of this jug.
