The Lumberjack miniature character jug prototype in red hat colorway modeled by Max Henk and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1983. A lumberjack performs the initial harvesting of trees for lumber and pulpwood for the logging industry. The term lumberjack usually refers to a logger from an earlier era before the advent of chainsaws, feller-bunchers and other modern logging equipment. Lumbering is the oldest industry in both the United States and Canada and played an important role in the rise and development of both countries. The traditional lumberjack worked in lumber camps and often lived a migratory life, following timber-harvesting jobs as they opened across the continent. Lumberjacks could be found wherever there were vast forests to be harvested. In popular culture the lumberjack is a strong, burly man who likes to brave the natural environment. They were often romanticized as hard-drinking, hard-working, no-nonsense, wild characters . The most famous depiction of a lumberjack in folklore is Paul Bunyan. This lumberjack is shown with his axe as the handle which, in the early days, was his only tool.
