The Lord Mayor of London character jug modeled by Stanley J. Taylor and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1990-1991. The Lord Mayor of London is the mayor of the city of London, distinguished from the London Mayor who governs a much larger area known as Greater London. The first Mayor of the city of London assumed office in 1191, and the first Lord Mayor took office in 1283. The Lord Mayor is elected annually from amongst the Aldermen of the City of London by a body of representatives of the City's Livery Companies. In the city he takes precedence over everyone including Royal princes. The Lord Mayor's role is primarily ceremonial and social, rather than political, although he does host visiting foreign dignitaries and promotes London's business credentials abroad. The reigning sovereign still receives the City sword from, and returns it to, the Lord Mayor before crossing the boundary at Temple Bar. The Lord Mayor rides in a magnificent eighteenth century golden coach when celebrating his inauguration each November. The London city scepter forms the handle of the jug.
