The Fisherman character jug prototype modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1968. A fisherman is a person who engages in the activity of fishing. Some fishermen do this as a profession, and may belong to a cooperative, corporation or union, but most fish for sport. While fishing is an ancient and worldwide practice that dates back at least 10,000 years and employs many techniques and traditions, it has been transformed both by becoming an organized sport and through modern technology. Fishing techniques are varied, including hand, spear or bow fishing, or fishing with hooks and lines, nets, traps, toxins, explosives, or even trained animals. Recreational and sport fishermen alike pursue fishing both for pleasure or competition. Commercial fishing provides large quantities of food to many countries. Although commercial fishing can entail a huge fleet of trawlers processing tons of fish daily, this fellow is more likely a one- or two-man operation with a small boat. With hand-casting nets, he sets off into the ocean in anticipation of another good day’s haul, guided home at night by the trusty lighthouse. A lighthouse, fishing nets and catch of fish form the handle of the jug. Only one example is known.
