The Fire King toby jug - Royal Doulton 1997

The Fire King toby jug designed by Martyn C. R. Alcock and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1997 limited edition of 1,500 for Lawleys By Post. Steeped in mythology, the Fire King dispenses harsh judgment from his book of ancient rights. A more modern version can be found in Chapter Six of "The Counterpane Fairy" by Katherine Pyle, published in 1895. In this children's book, which enjoyed popularity for 40 years and can still be found today, the Counterpane Fairy tells the sick boy, Teddy, in his dreams the story of the Fire King, who frees the indentured dwarves operating a forge in a mountain cave from the evil Ice Queen's clutches by creating a magic chain which melts the Queen into a raven and freezes her guardsmen to ice. In the story, Teddy himself is the Fire King, returned to the forge cave after many long years away. The Fire King toby jug is a pair with the Ice Queen toby jug.
