The Cardinal character jug tiny - Royal Doulton 1947-1960

The Cardinal tiny character jug modeled by Charles J. Noke and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1947-1960. Cardinals are dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church from whose ranks a Pope is chosen. They act as privy councilors and advise on matters of worldwide significance. Cardinal was first given as a title in the fifth century to the clergy in charge of those parishes around which the local religious life of Rome turned. The importance of the Cardinals was greatly enhanced when their right of electing the Pope was secured against the encroachments of the Emperor. This particular model was based on the famous actor, Henry Irving, who before the turn of the twentieth century played the role of Cardinal Wolsey, one of the most famous Cardinals in history, in Shakespeare's historical drama, "Henry VIII".
