The Blind Fiddler of Dooney character jug produced by Royal Tara of Galway, Ireland, circa 1993. The Fiddler of Dooney is a poem by William Butler Yeats first published in 1892. The poem tells of a skilled fiddler who would rather play the fiddle and entertain people than pursue other more pious callings. His assertion is that he is such an accomplished player and entertainer, upon his death St. Peter will admit him to heaven before his more devout relative so that he can entertain the people there. Today at Dooney Rock, a small hill overlooking Lough Gill in County Sligo, there is a prestigious instrumental competition held that is known as the Fiddler of Dooney Competition, being named after the poem. This blind fiddler has recently won this year's competition. The character jug features Royal Tara's trellis shamrock decor, and a fiddle forms the handle of the jug.
