Terry Fox character jug modeled by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1990 limited edition of 3. Terrance Stanley Fox (1958-1981) was a young Canadian athlete who, at the age of eighteen, lost one of his legs due to bone cancer. On one good leg he embarked on a “Marathon of Hope” run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Although he was forced to abort the run after being diagnosed with lung cancer, he raised twenty-four million dollars and inspired millions to participate in the annual event, now called “The Terry Fox Run” and held on the anniversary of his death every June. The event annually raises millions of dollars for cancer research. This jug was produced in only three copies to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Marathon of Hope. One was sold at auction to benefit Terry’s charity, one was given to his family and the third originally resided in the Sir Henry Doulton Gallery, but now is part of a private collection. The backstamp includes Terry’s lament, “Somewhere the hurting must stop.” Terry's artificial leg forms the handle of the jug.
