Squire toby jug blue/white - Germany circa 1910

Squire 3/4 body toby jug in a blue and white colorway produced in Germany circa 1910 and marked Ges Gesch. In medieval times, a squire was a young nobleman who was attendant on a knight or served the nobility in their castle for a specified period of time. A squire was also an English country landowner as depicted in this popular toby jug. The mark Ges Gesch is short for "Gesetzlich geschuzt" meaning registered in German. Ware marked in this way is commonly referred to as Ges Gesch ware.
