Sid James character jug modeled by Alexander Down and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 2001 limited edition of 1,500. Sid James (1913-1976) was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Both of his parents were in show business and much of his early life was spent on or backstage. Making his first appearance onstage at age ten, he grew to become an accomplished singer and dancer. When the Second World War broke out, he served as a lieutenant with part of his duties being the organization of entertainment for the troops. After the war Sid soon made a name for himself in gangster movies. He also spent five years on the perennially popular radio comedy, "Hancock’s Half Hour". James is best known for playing Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond, as he is portrayed here, one of the four main characters from the film "Carry On Up the Khyber", one in a series of the longest, most successful series of comedic films in British cinematic history. In 1976 Sid suffered a heart attack on the opening night of "The Mating Season", dying in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. His death came as a great shock, for he was seen as an affectionate rascal and was much loved by all. Medals of the British Governor form the handle of the jug.
