Shearer toby jug produced by Roy Kirkham Pottery of Tunstall, England, circa 1983. Sheep shearing is the process by which the woolen fleece of a sheep is cut off. The person who removes the sheep's wool is called a shearer. Typically each adult sheep is shorn once each year. Depending upon dialect, a sheep may be said to have been shorn, sheared or shore. This shearer toby jug is modeled after Jackie Howe, a famous Australian shearer. John "Jackie" Robert Howe (1861-1920) was a legendary Australian sheep shearer at the end of the 19th century. He shot to fame in pre-Federation Australia in 1892 when he broke the daily and weekly shearing records across the colonies.
