Scrooge bookend prototype - Royal Doulton circa 1990

Scrooge prototype bookend produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, circa 1990. Scrooge is the elderly man with a heart of stone from Dickens' novel "A Christmas Carol". Probably Charles Dickens' best-known character, the miserly Scrooge, with his familiar cry of "Bah, Humbug!", is visited by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, who sends three more spirits, or ghosts of Christmas, in hopes of reforming Scrooge's heartless and penny-pinching ways. Scrooge will not let his downtrodden partner leave work to return to his family for the Christmas holiday. After visits by the three ghosts on Christmas Eve, Scrooge finds compassion in his heart and changes his ways.
