Sailor character jug produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 2006 limited edition of 250 commissioned by Collectables Littlehampton. The Royal Navy is the oldest of the British armed services, and therefore is referred to as the Senior Service. From the late seventeenth century to halfway through World War II, it was the largest and most powerful navy in the world, helping to establish the British Empire as the dominant power of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was also most active in mapping the world by recording every coastline it encountered. Royal Navy vessels on surveying missions also carried out extensive scientific work. During the two World Wars, the Navy played a vital role in keeping the United Kingdom supplied with food, arms and raw materials and in defeating the German campaigns of submarine warfare. After World War II and during the Cold War, it was transformed into an anti-Soviet force. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, its role for the twenty-first century has returned to global operations. Anchor ropes, a life preserver and waves form the handle of the jug.
