Rule Britannia toby jug - Kevin Francis Ceramics circa 1993

Rule Britannia toby jug modeled by Douglas V. Tootle and produced by Kevin Francis Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, in a 1993 limited edition of 350. "Rule, Britannia!" is a British patriotic song, originating from the 1740 poem "Rule, Britannia" by James Thomson and set to music by Thomas Arne. It is most strongly associated with the Royal Navy, but is also used by the British Army. "Rule, Britannia!" soon developed an independent life of its own, quickly becoming the most lasting expression of the conception of Britain and the British Empire that emerged in the 1730s, "predicated on a mixture of adulterated mercantilism, nationalistic anxiety and libertarian fervour". Personified as a woman with a helmet and trident, a British flag forms the handle of this jug. Her helmet is removeable.
