Rooster Le Gaulois toby jug - Desvres circa 1880

Rooster Le Gaulois majolica toby jug produced by Desvres circa 1880 model number 298. A national symbol of France the Coq Gaulois or Gallic Rooster decorated the French flag during the Revolution. Rooster Le Gaulois has "Le Gaulois" on the banner on its right side. The shield on his left side reads "Chante Clair Pour La France" translated as "sing clearly for France." This pitcher was too similar to the Onnaing design that it was never put into full production making it very rare.
