Robert E. Lee character jug - Prestige Jugs circa 1987

Robert E. Lee character jug produced by Peggy Davies Ceramics of Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1987 using its Prestige Jugs tradename on request of Joe Boulton. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) was a Confederate general during the American Civil War, towards the end of which he was appointed the overall commander of the Confederate States Army. He led the Army of Northern Virginia - the Confederacy's most powerful army - from 1862 until its surrender in 1865, earning a reputation as a skilled tactician. Among the supporters of the Confederacy, Lee came to be even more revered after his surrender than he had been during the war. Military historians continue to pay attention to his battlefield tactics and maneuvering, though many think he should have designed better strategic plans for the Confederacy. The Confederate flag forms the handle of the jug.
