Regency Beau character jug modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, from 1962-1967. The Regency period was named for the time when George, Prince of Wales, acted as Regent during the illness of his father, King George III, between 1811 and 1820. However, the term is loosely applied to the years from 1805 to 1830 and is associated with beaux, or wealthy men of fashion. The best known of these fops was Beau Brummel, an intimate of the Prince Regent and arbiter of elegance. George Brummel's style was so admired that he regularly advised his fellow dandies on their dress. He prided himself on the cut of his coat and snugness of his breeches. It is said that the tying of his cravat would often take a dandy the whole morning and the resulting height of his neckwear made it difficult for him to turn or lower his head, giving him a haughty air as he strolled about town. The outfit was completed with a cane, which no well-dressed man would be without in public. A cane and handkerchief form the handle of the jug. The Regency Beau character jug was made in three sizes with this being the largest along with small (D6562) and miniature (D6565) sizes.
