Queen Mary I character jug modeled by David B. Biggs and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, as the 2004 Character Jug of the Year to commemorate her wedding to Prince Philip. England's first female ruler, Queen Mary Tudor (1516-1558), ruled England from 1553 to 1558. Mary was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. At the death of her half-brother Edward VI, Mary acted promptly and courageously in establishing her claim to the throne, As Queen Mary began to introduce legislation that she had long hoped for, beginning with an act proclaiming Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon valid and legal. Her other main act was to repeal all the religious laws passed during the reign of Edward VI, moving England once more toward a Catholic state. She took the suggestion of her cousin, Emperor Charles V of Spain, and married his son, Prince Philip. After four years of marriage and no children, the Queen thought she was with child, but none came, and after the symptoms of pregnancy began to fade, Mary was left quite ill. Her health became progressively worse and she died within six months, passing the crown to her half sister, adding that she hoped Elizabeth would maintain the Catholic faith in England. A bishop's miter, crucifix and mandolin form the handle of the jug.
