Postillion Toby jug - Pearlware circa 1790

Postillion Toby jug in Pearlware finish circa 1790 in the region around Portobello Scotland. A Postillion was a coach driver who guided the team of horses from atop a horse. The Postillion Toby is an Ordinary Toby with a bicorn hat and boots instead of shoes. The Pearlware finish refers to the final clear glazing that contained cobalt and gave a slight blue coloring to glaze that tended to pool between fingers and in creases in the face.
