Postillion Collier Toby jug - Portobello circa 1840

Postillion Collier Toby jug produced circa 1840 in the region around Portobello, Scotland. A Postillion was a coach driver who guided the team of horses from atop a horse. The Postillion Toby is an Ordinary Toby with a bicorn hat and boots instead of shoes. A Collier is a traditional coal miner. The Postillion Collier Toby features a blackened face which was the result of working in the mines.
