Police Woman teapot produced by Artone Pottery of Burslem, England, circa 1980. Racing through the streets of London in her squad car, this Metropolitan police woman needs to be an exceedingly competent driver. The piercing siren warns of her approach, but she must still weave in and out of the traffic at high speeds in order to reach the scene of the crime as quickly as possible. Handcuffs and truncheon beside her, the police woman is all prepared to make another successful arrest upon her arrival. There are fifty-two police forces in Britain, mainly organized on a local basis, and comprising about 150,000 full-time police officers, of whom about twelve percent are women. The Metropolitan Police Force and the City of London Force are responsible for policing London. The heart of policing is the work done by police constables, who are in constant contact with the public, patrolling the streets on foot or in cars.
