Pearly Boy character jug in a brown jacket colorway modeled by Harry Fenton and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in 1947. The original 'Arry character jug was designed with pearl buttons on his hat and with a blue coat. After about a year, the pearls on his hat were considered too intricate to hand paint. The painting process was modified to first paint the coat brown, and then the pearls were painted over. The pearls were then entirely eliminated from the mold creating the common 'Arry jug. Thus the Pearly Boy jug, so named by collectors, can be found with a blue or brown coat, the latter in shades ranging to tan and with white or brown buttons. All versions are rare, with the white buttoned brown coats and miniature sizes perhaps the rarest. All Pearly Boy jugs carry the 'Arry backstamp.
