Paul Pry toby jug - Staffordshire circa 1840

Paul Pry toby jug produced in Staffordshire circa 1840. Paul Pry was the eponymous character and inquisitive busybody in John Poole's play Paul Pry which opened at London's Haymarket Theatre in 1825. John Liston (1776-1846) was a leading comic actor of his day and played Paul Pry for many years. This jug was modeled in John Liston's likeness. The play was enormously popular throughout the 19th century.
