Pat Astley character jug colorway - Royal Crown Derby circa 1960

Pat Astley character jug in porcelain wearing a striped shirt colorway produced by Royal Crown Derby circa 1960. Pat joined Britain's Alpha Television (ATV) in January of 1958, being appointed from 823 applicants for the post. He joined television from a background of writing, directing and performing in amateur dramatics. He became well known as an in-vision continuity announcer. He later went on to appear as (Uncle) Pat with Mike Prince and (Auntie) Jean Morton on Tingha and Tucker. This was a presentation piece given to Astley in recognition of his accomplishments, not a standard production item. While both the white and full colorway versions are rare, the all-white version does appear in the market, but the colored jug is much rarer. The character jug photos are courtesy of Messrs Bamfords Auctioneers. The black and white photograph of Pat is copyright The Transdiffusion Broadcasting System.
