Parson character jug - Stangl Pottery circa 1935

Parson character jug in a full colorway designed by Tony Sarg and produced by Stangl Pottery of Flemington, New Jersey, circa 1935. A parson is an ordained Christian person responsible for a small area, typically a parish. The term was formerly often used for some Anglican clergy and, more rarely, for ordained ministers in some other churches. Parson comes with a removeable round hat that he wears outdoors and when removed serves as an ashtray. Known to Stangl collectors as stoby jugs (Stangl toby jugs), full colorways were original production in the 1930s to 1950s. Solid colorways were produced in the 1960s and 1970s.
