And when I love thee not Chaos is come again." Little does Othello realize, but this declaration to his wife is a forewarning of the tragic events to come. William Shakespeare's "Othello, The Moor of Venice" is a play of jealousy and obsession, and the tragedy of a man who kills the woman he loves. Drawing material for this famous work from a play by Giraldi Cinthio, Shakespeare first produced the play in 1604. The powerful drama tells the tale of Othello, the noble general who is married to Desdemona, the beautiful daughter of a Venetian senator. However, the malevolent and vindictive Iago instills suspicion in Othello's mind as to the fidelity of his wife and the trustworthiness of his companion, Cassio. The Moor suffers such anguish and wild fits of jealousy that he smothers Desdemona in her bed. Tragically he learns that both his friend and wife were innocent, and, comprehending the horror of his act, Othello takes his own life.
