Orthodox Priest stoneware toby jug produced by Royal Doulton of Lambeth, England, between 1926 and 1929. A Christian Orthodox priest is one who has formally studied the scriptures and been trained to minister to his flock and administer the sacraments of his religion. The term "Orthodox" translates from the Greek to mean "correctly believing" or "correctly glorifying" and was adopted by the Church in order to distinguish itself from what was becoming a larger and larger body of non-orthodox Christian denominations. What unites the Orthodox is theology. All members of the Church profess the same beliefs regardless of race or nationality. In practice and traditions, however, there are variations in style depending on country of origin and/or local custom. These local customs are accepted by church leaders since they are not perceived to conflict theologically with basic Orthodox teachings. The Orthodox Church is the dominant religious body in nine eastern countries: Bulgaria, Belarus, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Romania, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine. The priest's long hair forms the handle of the jug.
