Organ Grinder toby jug - Leonardo circa 1980

Organ Grinder toby jug produced by Leonardo of Italy circa 1980. Providing unusual street entertainment, the Organ Grinder plays popular tunes while his monkey collects tips from the crowd. Very common in Victorian London, street vendors sold merchandise or services that were easily transported; the term is synonymous with costermonger or peddler. Street vendors often advertised by loud street cries or chants, and bantered with customers, to attract attention and enhance sales. This Organ Grinder cries out, "Pennies for the Monk!"
