Ordinary Toby jug - Pearlware John Walton circa 1810

Ordinary Toby jug produced in a Pearlware finish by John Walton circa 1810. The Ordinary Toby is the original toby jug featuring a seated common man of the time wearing 18th century clothing and a tricorn hat. He typically holds a jug of his favorite ale in his left hand resting it on his knee and often has a churchwarden pipe propped alongside his right leg. There is a removeable cap that fits into the top of Toby's hat. Note the hand painted decorations on toby's vest and the jug of frothing ale he is holding. The Pearlware finish refers to the final clear glazing that contained cobalt and gave a slight blue coloring to glaze that tended to pool between fingers and in the creases in the face.
