Opivalo toby jug - Miklashevsky Porcelain circa 1850

Opivalo toby jug produced by the Miklashevsky Porcelain Factory in Volokitino, Russia, circa 1850. Opivalo is the name given to the Staffordshire Ordinary Toby, which is the original toby jug featuring a common man of the time wearing 18th century clothing and a tricorn hat. This Opivalo toby jug is seated in a high back chair, holding a large pitcher of ale on his left knee with his left hand. Russian factories named the typical Ordinary Toby Opivalo, meaning heavy drinker. Photo courtesy Russian State Historical Museum in Moscow
