Night Watchman toby jug - Goebel circa 1975

Night Watchman toby jug produced by W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik of Bavaria, Germany, circa 1975. The dependable night watchman, with his luminous lantern in tow, served the Williamsburg community by keeping a vigilant watch throughout the night. He made his rounds of various streets and alleys, checking doors and investigating any noises that were out of place. His job was to assure that all was well and secure so that the townsfolk could sleep in peace. In a time before mass production of clocks, he would call out the hours and the weather: "Twelve o'clock and all is well!" He also might be entrusted with lighting and extinguishing the streetlamps of the town each evening and morning.
