Murena toby jug - Orchies circa 1905

Murena majolica toby jug produced by Orchies of Orchies, France, circa 1905. The Murena, or eel, is coiled around the top of this pitcher with his body forming the handle. Murena were a favorite of ancient noble and elite Romans both as pets and as a delicacy at the dinner table. Orchies model numbers are a combination of letters and numbers. The letters are an abbreviation for the name of the jug and the number is the size of the jug. This jug is known in two sizes with this one being the larger. Photos courtesy of Leon Bertrand.
