Mrs. Varden sugar bowl - Beswick circa 1950

Mrs. Varden sugar bowl designed by Arthur Gredington and produced by Beswick of Longton, England, circa 1950. Martha Varden is a fictional character in the novel "Barnaby Rudge" (1841) by Charles Dickens. Martha Varden is married to Gabriel Varden and they have a daughter Dolly. "Mrs. Varden was a lady of what is commonly called an uncertain temper - a phrase which being interpreted signifies a temper tolerably certain to make everybody more or less uncomfortable", said Barnaby Rudge.
