American Toby Jug Museum 

Mr. Quaker character jug produced by Burgess & Leigh of Burslem, England, in a limited edition of 3,500 circa 1980. Mr. Quaker is the trade-marked image of the Quaker Oats Company, an American food conglomerate based in Chicago. Quaker Oats was formed in 1901 by the merger of three oat mills, including the Quaker Mill Company of Ohio, which held the trademark on the Quaker name. Expanding into other food and drink products beyond its traditional cereals, the company merged with PepsiCo in 2001. The antiquated Mr. Quaker image used by Quaker Oats looks nothing like a modern Quaker, as that form of dress has been long abandoned. The Company has stated that this is not true. The Quaker character first appeared in the U.S. in 1877 as a full-figured portrait. The current iconic image was derived from a painting by Haddon Sundblom, and was the first trademark ever registered for a cereal. Commissioned by the Quaker Oats Company as a promotional item, Mr. Quaker has a removeable hat.
