Mr. Holly toby jug produced by Tony Wood of Fenton, England, circa 1990 commissioned by Marshall Field's department store of Chicago. Mr. Holly is a personification of Christmas. In Christianity, holly was adopted as a symbol of Christ's crown of thorns, the crimson berries a symbol of his blood and the evergreen a metaphor for life after death. The tradition of decking the halls with boughs of holly at Christmas continues today. A pair of wings form the handle of the jug. This Mr. Holly toby jug creamer is part of a set with a Mr. Holly teapot, and a Mrs. Mistletoe teapot and sugar bowl.
