Monty character jug modeled by Harry Fenton and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, between 1946-1991. Bernard Law Montgomery, First Viscount of Alamein (1887-1976), familiarly known as Monty, was a British military hero of the Second World War. His victories in North Africa and Europe made him the idol of Great Britain. At the outbreak of World War II Monty served as a major general. Commanding the third division in France, he was rescued with his men from the beach at Dunkerque in May, 1940. In 1942 he took command of the Eighth army in Italy and North Africa where his energy and affectation of the simple beret and battle dress of the Tank Corps boosted the bruised morale of the men and restored their will to win. The Battle of El Alamein in October, 1942, led to the retreat of the German commander, Rommel, and the Axis forces out of Africa. Promoted to Field Marshal, Montgomery was appointed commander of the British Forces for the Normandy invasion ground forces where his strategy was characterized by wariness and tenacity. After the war, he served as deputy Supreme Allied Commander of NATO from 1951 until his retirement from the military in 1958. The names of theaters of war in which Monty served form the handle of this jug.
