Magistrate Lord Cornbury toby jug white - Big Brook Studio circa 1965

Magistrate Lord Cornbury toby jug produced in a white colorway by Grace Apgar, the founder of the Big Brook Studio Pottery of Marlboro, New Jersey, circa 1965. Magistrate Lord Cornbury was Edward Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon (1661-1723), and was an English aristocrat and politician. Cornbury's support of King William's reign eventually earned him the governorship of the provinces of New York and New Jersey, serving between 1701 and 1708. Lord Cornbury's conduct as governor has been generally remembered as scandalous. He was accused by his political enemies of being a moral profligate and wildly corrupt. Magistrate Cornbury is dressed in his official garb and holds a parchment in his right hand.
