Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton character jug - Royal Doulton 1997

Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton double-headed character jug modeled by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, in a 1997 limited edition of 1,500 commissioned by Lawleys By Post. Celebrating true love, this first-ever, double-headed character jug depicts England’s greatest naval commander, Lord Nelson, alongside the beautiful and charming Lady Hamilton, the love of Nelson’s life and mother of his daughter, Horatia, who was born in 1801. Emma Hamilton achieved celebrity through her beauty, personal vitality and skills as a performer. She fell in love with Nelson after the Battle of the Nile in 1798 when she and her husband, William Hamilton, the British ambassador at Naples, offered the wounded victor hospitality. Emma and Nelson returned to England in 1800 where their daughter was born. The affair was an international scandal, but it enhanced Nelson’s reputation as a romantic hero. At his death in 1805, Nelson entrusted Emma’s care to the nation, but this was ignored and she died a pauper in France in 1813. The Lord Nelson handle features Admiralty flags and a telescope. The Lady Hamilton handle features a theatrical mask and Maltese Cross.
